Vampires, Werewolves, and Psychics!

I’ve told this true story before but was recently asked about it. So, I will repeat it but begin by saying I’m perfectly normal!

Back in my professorial days, I was invited to a banquet recognizing members of the community who had generously donated to the university. Since my department had been a beneficiary, I agreed to go. It was a nice evening; however, events took a weird turn when dessert was served. The president of the university stepped to the podium and introduced the evening’s guest speaker-a psychic. A psychic? Seriously? This is an institution of scholarly endeavors, intellectual pursuit, research! I watched the woman approach the podium as the president regaled us with the psychic’s fame. Apparently, she was legit.

During her speech, the psychic shared her experience consulting with law enforcement on various cases during her lifetime. When her speech was over, everyone applauded, and dessert was served. The psychic began walking around to different tables, speaking with faculty members. I was watching her when she suddenly looked up and made eye contact with me. I’ll admit to being uncomfortable, especially as she started walking toward me! I scanned the table for a clove of garlic. Garlic wards off vampires, right? No leftover garlic. I picked up my fork and flipped it over, reading the small engraving, hoping it was silver. Silver bullets stop something. Werewolves? (Okay, I might be exaggerating a bit here, but I was not ready to have her stop beside where I was sitting and touch my shoulder, which she did. Then she spoke.)

“When are you going to start writing those books?” she asked. “Honey, your angels have been coming to you at night while you sleep and giving you those wonderful dreams. It’s time to start writing.”

WHAT! How did she know about my dreams? Apparently, I must have looked frightened because she smiled and gently patted me on the shoulder. “It’s okay,” she said and then walked to the next table.

As I said in the beginning of this blog, I consider myself a “normal” person. I have a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics. I’m a rational, empirically minded person, a scientist. However, I returned home that very night and started working on Touch the Sky, my first novel published.
